A look at the new Delta 400 Professional Collector's Edition

Film is thriving. So much so that in recent years we’ve been spoiled by new offerings in the film world.

We’ve seen Harman manufacture new colour film with their Phoenix range down in England, as well as Lucky Film Corporation in China, with their Colour C200 & C400 offerings. That, and the whole thing with Kodak recently meaning we’re able to sell their film a little cheaper (more on that to come), Ilford are now testing the waters with Delta 400.

“Ehhh, Delta 400 has been around for years.”

Yes, it has. But beyond the fresh black packaging, and being branded a ‘Collector’s Edition’ this is still very much new.

“For the first time, one of our B&W 35mm films has been coated onto our clearer roll film base with its anti-halation protection.”
“It offers subtle improvements to dynamic range, shadow detail, scanning, halation, and sharpness, while still retaining the same characteristics, speed, and processing times as the standard product.”

Unlike with Ilford’s current line-up, the clear base lends itself to being developed as black and white slides. Though we’re processing as standard, here.

We shot a couple rolls to test it out, and scanned on the legendary Frontier SP-500!

It’s worth noting that black and white film is processed with our custom modified Noritsu V30S running Ilfotec RT which will, as with all chemicals, affect how the grain presents, so bare that in mind if you home process with your own chemicals to your own tastes!

Just how limited is it, though. Is there a future for this version of Delta 400?

Sifting through Ilford’s own words on Instagram, it’s undecided.

”Just testing the market and seeing what people think. If we were to replace the existing film with this then it would likely cost more due to the anti-halation layer.”

We’ve got a very limited amount of stock, and are shifting them at £13 a pop. Come get some!
